Chapter 21 - JUSTIN

Apparently, Cain wasn't familiar with hellhounds.

He stared blankly at me before repeating what I'd said. "A hellhound?"

"Yes!" The hellhound reared its head and howled, sending shivers down my spine. I'd smelled it the moment the wind changed directions. I tried to catch up to Cain before he hit it with a spell from his staff.

Whatever he'd used hadn't harmed the hellhound. It had just annoyed it. And it had alerted it someone was here.

The problem was, we were trapped near the edge of the cliff until the nearest aether coil was taken offline. Sissera couldn't do that until we dealt with the hellhound.

Cain asked another question. "Hellhounds are like Cerberus but without three heads?"

"It's a demon spirit summoned into the shape of a dog."

"Okay." He didn't seem concerned. "Can it be killed?"

"The form can be killed. The demon will be sent back to Haedaemos."

"That makes things easier." He traced a complex pattern on his staff.

The hellhound had stopped running and was sniffing the air. It knew someone was out there, but it apparently couldn't sense it through Cain's camouflage blind. Two more hounds joined it. They sniffed each other's butts for a moment then stared at each other.

They were talking, mentally at least. Probably about how their butts smelled. I wondered if I should summon one myself. They were too far away for me to eavesdrop on their conversation.

Stacey and Sissera were suddenly next to me. They'd sneaked up so silently I hadn't even noticed. They hissed in unison. Sissera's lips peeled back to reveal razor sharp teeth. Her ears flattened against her head.

The wind changed direction again. The hellhounds sniffed the air. They abruptly zeroed in directly on us.

"They've got pendants on their collars," Cain said. "That must be what protects them from the aether coils."

I hadn't even noticed.

The hounds charged right at us.

"They must have sensitive noses." Cain didn't look the least bit worried. He aimed down the scope on his staff. A translucent spike of energy raced down the staff. A hellhound's head exploded.

He aimed. Fired.

The second hellhound lost its head. The third one dodged behind a satellite dish before he got a bead on it. I switched to demon vision and watched as their spirits were sucked back into Haedaemos.

Sissera abruptly raced forward. I tried to grab her, but she was already past me.

"What the hell?" I turned to Stacey. "She can't fight a hellhound!"

"I know, but she was quite insistent."

"On what?"

Sissera raced past the satellite dish where the final hellhound was sheltering. She grabbed a collar in her mouth and raced back. The last hellhound zipped out after her. Cain took aim, but the hound was directly behind her.

He traced a pattern and thrust his hand forward. The hellhound yelped. Tumbled head over heels and slid across the rocky ground. Sissera was in the clear. Cain fired. The final hellhound's head exploded.

Cain took the collar from Sissera's mouth. "You think this will work for a human?"

Damn, he was a smooth operator. Assassin class for sure.
